Synopsis: One of the greatest assets of a company is its goodwill, representing the hard work and dedication of its owners and employees which have solidified its reputation in the communities in which it operates. A company’s trademark embodies this reputation and is a symbol of the quality products and services it offers. Protecting a trademark is paramount to maintaining a company’s viability, as it preserves the integrity of the company’s reputation and ensures that the public equates its trademark with the quality and integrity of its products and services. In order to adequately protect these rights, a business owner must understand what a trademark is, how rights to a trademark are acquired, what the benefits of federal trademark registration are, how it can protect against trademark infringement, what damages it may incur as the result of infringement, and what actions can be taken when an infringer has been discovered. In today’s world, it is also important to understand what trademark issues are presented by the use of the Internet, how a company can prevent cybersquatting and the use of its trademark as a domain name by unauthorized users, and how a trademark can be protected in the global marketplace. With this understanding, measures can be taken to ensure not only that trademark rights exist, but that a business owner can effectively prevent his competitors from obtaining a free ride on the goodwill he has worked so hard to create.

Lunch will be provided for attendees, but space is limited. Those who are interested in attending must RSVP by contacting Executive Director Gary Keller at (859) 431-1500 or e-mailing Gary at gkeller@cbcky.com BY FRIDAY, MAY 1.
